More about The Carolina Jug Stompers
The Carolina Jug Stompers bring high level musicianship to a branch of roots music vital to the development of jazz, rock and roll, pop, and folk. The jugbands of the 1920s were among the first jazz musicians, and their surviving recordings were a major influence on musicians such as the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and The Lovin' Spoonful. Now this all-star quartet, launched by the critically acclaimed CD "Rooster On A Limb," present a feast of classic jug band songs on topics from gin to chickens, spiced with rare ragtime pieces and more modern jazz tunes retro-arranged into an earlier form. Fine singers all, they offer a rich blend of vocal harmonies backed by improvised acoustic instrumental work. And they love the music and making it together, making for an infectious energy and all around good time wherever they perform. Luke Faust, wizard of the mysterious art of jug blowing, has been a musician's musician around New York City for decades, playing with The Holy Modal Rounders among other groups and in the legendary 60s Greenwich Village folk scene. Ron Cole, called "the maven of Hokum", plays a slippery fiddle style steeped in his vast collection of rare 78 rpm records. Known for his mastery of all strings old-timey, Randy Johnson, defines versatility while setting the standard for the band on both vocals and instrumentals. WB Reid, of The Todalo Shakers and The Bing Bang Boys, adds his unparalleled driving touch on the banjo-guitar, a largely forgotten instrument once played by Papa Charlie Jackson and Django Reinhart.

So that no one has to worry about their strings or instrument, we'll tune down to G-tuning rather than up to A-tuning - same tunes and fingering in both. This workshop is appropriate for anyone with at least basic fiddle or violin skills.

Midwestern Fiddle Styles -- 2:45-4:45 pm
The Plains states have a distinctive tradition of dance fiddling with many fast, driving, and rather notey tunes. Students in this workshop will learn a couple of these, and work on the chordal seconding technique used by Uncle Bob Walters, the great radio fiddler from Nebraska. Also, we'll explore some tips to better technique, especially intonation, bowing, and using that all-important little finger. Appropriate for anyone with at least basic fiddle or violin skills.

Cost is $35 for one or $60 for both. For registration and more information, see Dusty Strings, or contact WBReid@Compuserve.com (or reply to this e-mail).
